90 points for Brunello di Montalcino Corte dei Venti 2009

The 2009 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino
(Written by Walter Speller)
In early January 2014, I was invited for an exclusive tasting of about 200 Brunello di Montalcino different wines 2009 by the Brunello Wine Consortium of Montalcino at its office in the center of the famous hill town. My tasting of the 2009 grape harvest revealed that this is another challenging year in Montalcino, and that the main problem had been the weather. Hot summer temperatures and lack of rain have predominated during the crucial stages of growth. As a result, most wines are prematurely evolved, and while this makes the best wines pleasant now, many Brunello di Montalcino 2009 offer cooked fruit sensations, strong alcohol presence, low acidity and fleeting ns. Others have more acidity, but with dried, aggressive fruit sensation, with astringent n. But there are many styles in between, ranging from soft and sexy to skinny and thin.
The trait that distinguishes almost all of 2009 is the lack of a good structure for aging, which is unusual for wines that are famous for a gritty acidity and rigid n that need years to be softened. The best 2009 are wines of great finesse and balance and they will be superb in the coming years. Their early drink-ability makes them ideal for restaurant lists. However, the 2009s that have a strong n, already lack of rich fruit and will not improve over time. The production area was very important during 2009, and fuels the debate about an official subdivision in Montalcino.
"Our older vineyards in the north area, where it is cooler, performed better in 2009, while our younger vineyards in the warmer southern areas suffered more," says Guido Orzalesi, manager of Altesino. Our 2009 is extremely elegant and ready to be enjoyed. "
